Using CNS Vital Signs to Screen for Mild Cognitive Impairment and More

Mar 30, 2026
At DCND, we incorporate CNS Vital Signs (CNSVS), a scientifically validated computerized cognitive testing platform, into our evaluation process. This can help your provider identify neurological issues earlier.

At DCND, early detection is one of the most powerful tools we have to protect and preserve brain health. Subtle changes in memory, attention, or processing speed can be easy to overlook—but they may be early indicators of underlying neurological conditions. That’s why we incorporate CNS Vital Signs (CNSVS), a scientifically validated computerized cognitive testing platform, into our evaluation process.

What Is CNS Vital Signs?

CNS Vital Signs is a non-invasive, computerized assessment that measures key aspects of cognitive function, including:

  • Memory (verbal and visual)

  • Processing speed

  • Executive functioning

  • Attention and concentration

  • Reaction time

The test compares your performance to age-matched norms, helping identify patterns that may suggest early cognitive decline or other neurological concerns.

Why We Use CNS Vital Signs

CNSVS is particularly helpful in screening for mild cognitive impairment (MCI)—a condition where cognitive changes are noticeable but not severe enough to interfere significantly with daily life. Identifying MCI early allows for closer monitoring, lifestyle interventions, and when appropriate, treatment planning.

Beyond MCI, CNS Vital Signs can also support evaluation and monitoring of:

  • Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias

  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

  • Traumatic brain injury (concussion/post-concussion syndrome)

  • Depression and anxiety-related cognitive changes

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • Cognitive effects of medications or medical conditions

It is important to note that CNSVS is a screening and monitoring tool, not a standalone diagnostic test. Results are always interpreted alongside your medical history, neurological exam, and, if needed, imaging or laboratory studies.

What Patients Can Expect

The CNS Vital Signs assessment is simple and patient-friendly:

  • Duration: Typically 45-60 minutes

  • Format: Computer-based, consisting of a series of interactive tasks

  • Environment: Quiet, supervised clinical setting

  • Preparation: No special preparation is required, though being well-rested and wearing any needed vision or hearing aids is recommended

During the test, you will complete exercises such as remembering words, responding to visual cues, and solving simple problems. The tasks are designed to be straightforward but sensitive enough to detect subtle cognitive differences.

After the test, your neurologist will review the results with you, explain what they mean, and discuss whether any follow-up is needed.

Who Is Not a Candidate?

While CNS Vital Signs is appropriate for many patients, it may not be suitable for everyone. Individuals who may not be ideal candidates include:

  • Those with severe cognitive impairment who cannot understand or complete the tasks

  • Patients with significant visual or motor impairments that would interfere with using a computer

  • Individuals with limited English proficiency, unless testing is available in their preferred language

  • Patients experiencing acute medical or psychiatric conditions that would affect performance (e.g., delirium, severe anxiety, or active migraine)

  • Patients who are color blind may not be able to complete portions of this test.

In these cases, alternative evaluation methods may be more appropriate.

The Value of Early Insight

Cognitive changes can feel uncertain or even frightening, but objective tools like CNS Vital Signs help bring clarity. By identifying changes early, we can take proactive steps—whether that means further testing, lifestyle adjustments, or targeted treatment.

If you or a loved one have noticed changes in memory, focus, or thinking, we encourage you to schedule an evaluation. Your brain health is worth the attention.
